The process usually starts with an interview with the psychologist during which all concerns can be discussed and the appropriate path forward can be discussed. During this interview relevant background and developmental history is also discussed. Following the interview the process can include an assessment and/or therapy.
Psycho-Educational Assessment:
In order to provide a thorough service to you, a psycho-educational assessment of your child’s current functioning is done. The details of what the assessment entails is dependent on the needs of the child, family and other role players. This will be discussed during the interview. It may furthermore be necessary to talk to other individuals (like teachers and other professional persons) to gather more information. It will however, be done with your permission and all information will be treated as confidential.
Shortly after the assessment you will get a detailed verbal feedback of the assessment results. During the feedback session a plan of action will be formulated on interventions, treatment and support of your child. Parent guidance may also be provided. This process may take place over a few sessions. You will receive a detailed written report, explaining the findings. This report is your personal property.
Therapeutic process:
Therapy sessions are scheduled according to need, urgency and various other factors. Sessions are usually on a weekly basis, and range between 45 – 60 minutes in length.
Therapy can contribute to a person’s general functioning and personal growth. On the short term therapy may lead to emotional experiences that could have an impact on functioning. The success of therapy depends on various factors. One important factor is how much responsibility the client takes in order to bring around change. Successful therapy cannot be guaranteed.
